3 Things That You Should Know About Your Wedding DJ

There are three key things that you should know about your wedding DJ before you sign on the dotted line. How do you find the perfect wedding DJ for you needs? What is important to you? Do you want your guests up and dancing the entire night or are you more concerned with food and decor?

Not all Wedding DJs are alike and it can be so confusing trying to decide between one DJ and the next. It’s time to do some internet stalking for your potential DJ. Check out their website (if they don’t have a website – would you really trust them with the success of your wedding?). Are they posting on Instagram and Facebook on a frequent basis (if they are not – are they really that busy or any good?). If they are a karaoke DJ or Bar DJ – then they probably are not experienced as a wedding DJ. The two are not at all alike. It’s like comparing a RADIO DJ to a WEDDING DJ. A wedding DJ handles all the behind the scenes coordination at your wedding – bar and radio DJs just play music and might make an announcement or two. It’s like asking your accountant to do your open-heart surgery – not the same skill set.

So how do you sort out the difference in DJs and what to pay for your wedding DJ? Is the most expensive the best and the cheapest the worst? What gear should they have? Exactly what do you look for? Here are three quick and easy things to do when comparing wedding DJs for your reception.

1. Stop Shopping By Price

Stop:  Shopping by price for a wedding DJ will only guarantee that you get the CHEAPEST DJ.  You didn’t buy your wedding dress at Wal-Mart or your food from Taco Bell – so why do you think you can find a great DJ on Craig’s List for under $600?   I’m sure all DJ’s know what they are worth and charge a price relative to their skills.

If a DJ was great, why wouldn’t they be charging at least the national average price of $1200- $1600?  Throwing in free up-lighting or a photographer does not make them any better of a DJ.  It does not guarantee you or your guests an amazing time.  It might result in all your guests leaving early and not having a great time.

2. Look – Social Proof Is Powerful

Look:  Social proof is powerful.  What do past clients say about your perspective DJ on national websites such as The Knot, or Wedding Wire?  Has their work been featured on national wedding blogs or in magazines?  If you can not find more than a couple of reviews – maybe you should keep looking around for a more qualified DJ for your wedding.  Just OK is not good enough for your wedding entertainment.

Really read the reviews – if the client is just saying they had a great time at their wedding, it really doesn’t mean much. You will feel the difference between an OK 5-star review and a GLOWING 5 STAR REVIEW if you read a few reviews.

3. Listen – Hear What You Should Expect At Your Wedding

Listen:  You get to taste the wedding cake and caterer’s food ahead of time.  You get to see sample photos from your photographer.  Be sure to HEAR audio recordings of your DJ doing a wedding introduction and sample mixes of their craft.  A photo of their wedding attire will help you weed out the sneaker-wearing weekend DJ or glittery vest & bow tie DJ.  A photo of their equipment setup is also important.  That way there is no surprise self-promoting signs, ugly orange extension cords or other eye soars at your wedding.

Promotional videos can be misleading. Is the music you hear really what was playing when the video clip caught guests dancing? Were they dancing all the time or just for that one song at the wedding? What does your DJs voice sound like when they make announcements? Do they trip over their own words when introducing the bridal party?
