Wedding Lighting Options At Your Reception

Many people ask what the differences are in lighting packages. I wanted to try and answer most of your questions with this blog post. There are three basic kinds of lighting at a wedding reception. There are dance floor lights, table lighting and architectural lighting of the room.

Dance Floor Lighting:

Basic Dance Floor lighting consists of 2-3 light fixtures that move, change color and shape of the beam based on the music. This is a great way to give some energy to your dance floor.

Club Lighting takes your basic dance floor lighting and brings it to a larger level. We bring more light fixtures. The style and complexity of the fixtures rivals what you’d see in a typical night club. This style lighting creates more of a dance party atmosphere. We can control the lights and adjust them based on fast v. slow music.

Table Illumination:

Table lighting can come in a few typical styles. You can illuminate your tables with candles. You can use LED glow fixtures in vases or in your floral arrangements (talk to your florist about lighting options). You can also pin-spot your table centerpieces. Each table centerpiece would have 1-2 white pin-spots pointed at it from high above (ceiling mounted or 11’ in air well above people) to make your table glow. We can do all guest tables or just your head table, cake table and maybe even your parent’s table. We can even make a table GLOW from underneath.

Architectural Room Lighting or Up-Lighting:

Up-lighting is a huge wedding trend. Something so simple can dramatically change the overall feel of your venue. Dark wood tones? We can warm it up with an Amber LED or Par Can. Want to turn the room blue or pink? We can do that too with our 3 watt LED high intensity LED up-lights (~10,000 lumen output). These up-lights can remain one color through the entire reception or we can wirelessly control color scene changes for your entrance, first dance, or the lights can change based on the music over the course of the evening to add to your party atmosphere.

You can use wash LED lighting OUTSIDE to change a tent or even the ENTRANCE of your venue.

Texture lighting normally requires high vaulted ceilings or tents but can be projected on divider walls, behind your head table or on the ceiling or dance floor to add yet another dimension to your space.

Meg & Skip’s Wedding Reception – The Society Room of Hartford CT – DJ and Lighting

Meg & Skip are from the RI area, but found the Society Room of Hartford and fell in love with the space.  They quickly realized that they wanted to do up-lighting in this space and the room was just a-glow with our amber lighting.  Take a close look at Meg's dress - it was just stunning!  It was probably the most amazing wedding dress that I've seen in my 20+ years doing this.

They were heavily involved with their music selection for their reception - NO GUEST REQUESTS were allowed.   From Dire Straits to Bob Marley to Death Cab For Cutie and Floggy Molly - it was a very unique night.

Introduction Songs:  Duke of Earl (her dad's name is Earl), Don't Stop Believin - Journey
First Dance:  If I Leave This World Alive - Flogging Molly
Meg & Dad's Dance:  Father & Daughter - Paul Simon

Joyce & Sean’s Wedding – Delaney House in Holyoke

Joyce & Sean had a beautiful day for their wedding.  Their party bus delivered them to their reception held at The Delaney House in Holyoke.    Their photographer, Robert Charles took some amazing photos of the bridal party at Forest Park in Springfield prior to arriving at the reception.

Joyce and Sean has us provide event lighting, DJ and a remote speaker out on the deck.  I had DJ'd Sherri & Joe's wedding a couple years back (Sean's sister and brother in law), so there were many familiar faces out in the audience.

Bridal Party Introduction:  How We Do - The Game
Couple Introduction Song:  Bring Em Out - TI
First Dance:  Just The Way You Are - Billy Joel
Cake Cutting Song:  You & Me - Dave Matthews Band

New Architectural Up-lighting and Lightscape Possibilities

Lighting has become such a large part of most weddings thanks to TV shows such as Platinum Weddings and My Fair Wedding with David Tutera.   Lighting can take a boring reception hall and turn it into a masterpiece.

We offer both full wireless control LED wash lighting and traditional static/single color (Halogen Par Cans).  This allows us to fit into most client's budgets and still provide a great visual effect for your wedding.

We can even pin spot each table at your wedding to highlight the centerpiece and really upscale the entire wedding experience for you.

The Log Cabin, Holyoke MA

We were just up to the Log Cabin in Holyoke for a corporate holiday party.  Funny thing about this party was that our clients DIDN'T want any holiday music (politically correct?).  They were a fun crowd.  Two of the couples in the audience - I had DJ'd their daughter's wedding.

There were three parties going on at the Log Cabin that night.  Our party started first.  When I was packing up, we were the only ones left in the building.  I guess the other parties were not as fun.

Check out the photos of our uplighting at the Log Cabin.

Union Station – Worcester, MA

I had the opportunity to check out a new venue in Worcester yesterday.  I was out in the Worcester/Framingham area meeting clients yesterday.  The owners of Maxwell-Silverman's just renovated the old Worcester train station.  You just have to see it.  It is a large space.  All I could think about was how beautiful it would look with our event lighting.

Check out a few photos that I took of the space.

Lighting – The Difference

I had the opportunity to attend a lighting training class put on by the American DJ Association last night in CT.  The event was well attended with many well recognized leaders in the DJ industry in attendance.    The presenter was well versed in DMX light training and we learned a couple tricks last night.

The biggest thing we learned was not something from the presenter, it was from the other area DJs who were dabbling in the architectural uplighting at weddings.  NO ONE HAS NEAR THE CAPABILITIES THAT WE HAVE.  They are literally years behind us when it comes to equipment and experience.   With our wireless DMX capabilities and our higher output lighting fixtures, we clearly outshine what they are trying so hard to do.  With more than $8,000 invested, their $100 light fixtures just won't do much for the atmosphere at your event.

Take a very close look at the photos that other area "lighting vendors" are promoting at uplighting.  Notice how the room is PITCH BLACK and all you see is their lights?  No faces of guests.  That's a dead giveaway.  Something is wrong.

If you want your wedding to look like a circus tent, then by all means enjoy their $500 upsell.  If, however you are serious about lighting your venue properly, come see what we have to offer.    It's going to cost you more, but you will be absolutely blown away with the end results.
