Wedding Lighting Options At Your Reception
Many people ask what the differences are in lighting packages. I wanted to try and answer most of your questions with this blog post. There are three basic kinds of lighting at a wedding reception. There are dance floor lights, table lighting and architectural lighting of the room.
Dance Floor Lighting:
Basic Dance Floor lighting consists of 2-3 light fixtures that move, change color and shape of the beam based on the music. This is a great way to give some energy to your dance floor.
Club Lighting takes your basic dance floor lighting and brings it to a larger level. We bring more light fixtures. The style and complexity of the fixtures rivals what you’d see in a typical night club. This style lighting creates more of a dance party atmosphere. We can control the lights and adjust them based on fast v. slow music.
Table Illumination:
Table lighting can come in a few typical styles. You can illuminate your tables with candles. You can use LED glow fixtures in vases or in your floral arrangements (talk to your florist about lighting options). You can also pin-spot your table centerpieces. Each table centerpiece would have 1-2 white pin-spots pointed at it from high above (ceiling mounted or 11’ in air well above people) to make your table glow. We can do all guest tables or just your head table, cake table and maybe even your parent’s table. We can even make a table GLOW from underneath.
Architectural Room Lighting or Up-Lighting:
Up-lighting is a huge wedding trend. Something so simple can dramatically change the overall feel of your venue. Dark wood tones? We can warm it up with an Amber LED or Par Can. Want to turn the room blue or pink? We can do that too with our 3 watt LED high intensity LED up-lights (~10,000 lumen output). These up-lights can remain one color through the entire reception or we can wirelessly control color scene changes for your entrance, first dance, or the lights can change based on the music over the course of the evening to add to your party atmosphere.
You can use wash LED lighting OUTSIDE to change a tent or even the ENTRANCE of your venue.
Texture lighting normally requires high vaulted ceilings or tents but can be projected on divider walls, behind your head table or on the ceiling or dance floor to add yet another dimension to your space.

Meg & Skip’s Wedding Reception – The Society Room of Hartford CT – DJ and Lighting
Meg & Skip are from the RI area, but found the Society Room of Hartford and fell in love with the space. They quickly realized that they wanted to do up-lighting in this space and the room was just a-glow with our amber lighting. Take a close look at Meg's dress - it was just stunning! It was probably the most amazing wedding dress that I've seen in my 20+ years doing this.
They were heavily involved with their music selection for their reception - NO GUEST REQUESTS were allowed. From Dire Straits to Bob Marley to Death Cab For Cutie and Floggy Molly - it was a very unique night.

How Many Up-Lighting Fixtures Do I Need For My Wedding Reception?
How Many Up-Lighting Fixtures Do I Need For My Wedding Reception? This is a question that we get asked all the time in the lighting industry. As a wedding lighting expert, there is not a single answer to this question. It depends on whether there are specific things or objects in the room that need to be highlighted. Is the room symmetrical? You want your lighting to be symmetrical and fit the space as well. Too many fixtures can be just as bad as too few.
If your wedding venue has beautiful columns all around the room – this might be the architectural feature that you want to highlight with a light on each. Maybe there are dramatic arched windows that need to be lit on each side (or on each window sill). Do you want lights on each side of your entryway? Maybe there is a need for lighting just outside the room to light the entry from that side? A lighting professional will walk with you and do a site inspection prior to your wedding date and you can discuss your lighting needs with them.
I can tell you, that we always bring more lighting fixtures than we expect to use at any given event. Extras always come in handy when you find out that the cake was moved on the floor plan and you now need a special light for behind it or that the room was shifted so the head table is now on the opposite side of the room or maybe just as spares if the room just doesn’t look symmetrical once we are done setting up.
Lighting is all about the look of the room. We will setup and then step back and look. Are there dead spots in the room or does a light look out of place? We will tweak our lighting setup to give you the best possible impact. Do we charge by the fixture? No. Our fees are based on the overall size and complexity of any given event. Do we need to bring all our gear up 2 flights of stairs? Is your venue in a downtown area that is hard to reach with truck & trailer? How long do we have to setup? Will we need 1, 2 or 3 assistants for setup and tear down? All these factors go into deciding fees. Will we charge more for more complex events that require twice as much gear? Yes.
A lighting company that charges based on a per fixture basis is not really interested in the wow factor of your room. We might recommend PAR cans or our new 3.0 watt LED systems with Red-Green-Blue-Amber color mixing. We might suggest a single color v. color scene changes to save you money on your lighting budget. Wedding Lighting Ideas – Reception Up Lighting and Event Lighting With Rob Alberti’s Event Services
Couples often spend months planning every detail of their wedding, from the exact shades for the bridal party dresses and the font on the wedding invitations to the decoration and topper of the wedding cake and the song played as they come in for their grand entrance, but a surprising number of wedding couples never realize they should also plan the appropriate wedding lights.
Without the proper lighting, pictures may not turn out as well, the details of the floral centerpieces and wedding gown lace may be missed, and you may not clearly see the smiling faces of your friends and family members. You might want to highlight the beauty of certain objects using pin spots, which also can accentuate a table’s place settings or linens.
There are many considerations to make when deciding on wedding lighting:
- What lighting is already available in the facility?
- Will there be candle lighting in the room?
- What is the overall moon that you want to set for your wedding? Dramatic? Party? Romantic?
- Will the lighting match both the facility and the rest of your wedding color scheme?
- Will lighting help your photographer or videographer’s work? Up Lighting can add dimension to a photographer’s work. Up lighting and dance floor ceiling washes can help reduce the need for flood lighting from your videographer’s camera (which can detract from the dance atmosphere)
What Needs To Be Lit?
- You can highlight the head table and cake
- You can wash the dance floor with lighting
- You can create pattern lighting on large walls or ceilings
- You can light architectural features within the room (Columns, windows, etc) with up lighting or LED par can lighting effects
- You can bring attention to certain tables by using under table lighting to make the table linens glow with color
- You could spotlight the dance floor for your first dance or use a spotlight for your grand entrance
Typically wedding reception up lighting is set as your “background” color of your wedding and should not change. For some couples, being able to make color scene changes throughout their reception or having the up lighting change based on the music is important. Your lighting designer can offer many suggestions to help create the perfect color pallet for your wedding reception.
Wedding reception up lighting can make an inexpensive banquet hall look upscale. Up lighting can bring drama and that “wow” factor to your reception. Reception lighting can make your photos look amazing and add color to your video. Event lighting will help highlight the important features of your reception and can bring your wedding theme to life with a cohesive design color and style.

Jennifer & Clark’s Wedding Reception at The New Haven Lawn Club – Architectural Uplighting
We were asked by Jennifer and Clark to light their wedding reception at The New Haven Lawn Club. Now, if you have never seen The New Haven Lawn Club, it is this turn of the century old world banquet room. The unique chandeliers in this hall are completely stunning. We provided lighting on the back wall behind the band (texture pattern), uplighting on the stage, behind the bar and all around the room.

Wedding Reception Event Lighting And Up-lighting (Uplighting) Ideas
This is the era of TV Wedding planning shows – Platinum Weddings, My Fair Wedding, Say Yes To The Dress and Four Weddings. There are so many great wedding planning ideas that are presented. One of the biggest wedding trends for 2010 is the use of lighting at your reception.
You can turn an otherwise boring reception hall into an amazing display of light and color to help accentuate your wedding color scheme. You can make your wedding color pallet come to life. Having Red Flowers? Use the complimentary color – green or light green on the walls to make them pop. Bridesmaids dresses are eggplant? Use a lighter lavender on the wall to give them more of a 3rd dimension as the bridal party enters. Ugly wall in your facility? You can paint the wall any color you like with up-lighting
Wedding event lighting can also take the form of texture lighting. Custom light patterns or gobos can be made to mimic your cake design, invitation pattern or to give character to an otherwise boring space. Maybe you want to project stars on the ceiling of your wedding reception venue? With a few theatrical projection lighting fixtures, high output LED uplights or par can event lights, you can transform a low-end facility into a high-end looking wedding venue.
There are many wedding reception lighting ideas that we can talk about. Using a custom gobo light pattern or “your name in lights”, you can personalize your wedding with your initials, name or wedding date. You can dress up your wedding cake by focusing a wedding gobo on the wall. You can place your name in lights on the dance floor or wall above your head table
You can highlight architectural features with event lighting using LED up-lighting fixtures or conventional par cans as your uplights. Using event lighting at your wedding, you can make columns stand out, fireplaces come alive, lounge areas take on a new feel, dead space becomes artwork, your wedding cake is backlit. Lighting can completely transform your wedding reception.

Joyce & Sean’s Wedding – Delaney House in Holyoke
Joyce & Sean had a beautiful day for their wedding. Their party bus delivered them to their reception held at The Delaney House in Holyoke. Their photographer, Robert Charles took some amazing photos of the bridal party at Forest Park in Springfield prior to arriving at the reception.
