Wedding LED Lighting – Rob Alberti’s Event Services (formerly After Hours DJ Service)

In years past, you were limited to simple lighting at your wedding reception. Maybe your DJ could bring a mirror ball or some disco lighting for the dance floor. You could not ask them to make your white walled venue into a pink wall. With today’s new range of Wedding LED Lighting, you can do just about anything at your wedding reception.

There are different styles and quality levels when it comes to Wedding LED Lighting. First, there is a difference in brightness – the first generation of Wedding LED Lighting were 0.1 watt LEDs. They were nice, but you literally had to shut off all the lights in your venue before you could see the effect. (We immediately sold our 0.1 watt LED Wedding Lights as soon as the brighter fixtures came out)

The second generation of Wedding LED Lighting were made up of 1.0 watt LEDs. These were markedly brighter than the first generation LED fixtures. Even with the venue lights at normal banquet level, you could clearly see the effect that they made in the venue. You were still limited by sunset time and windows in a venue – they could not compete with direct sunlight.

The newest fixtures for Wedding LED Lighting are the 3.0 watt fixtures. Some have tri-colored LEDs (no need for separate Red Green Blue LEDs), others added White or Amber LEDs to allow a bigger color pallet to be achieved in your wedding venue.

Conventional Par Can lighting with color gel filters have a difficult time reproducing Blues and Purples. Wedding LED Lighting used to have a hard time with White and Amber hues. This new generation of 3.0 watt Wedding LED Lighting eliminates the color matching concerns of earlier versions of LED lighting.

So, before you hire your DJ or lighting specialist for your wedding, be sure to ask some basic questions about their Wedding LED Lighting.

Are your fixtures 0.1 w, 1.0 w or 3.0 w LED fixtures?
How many fixtures do you typically use? (10 – 20 fixtures are required for most facilities, probably twice as many fixtures needed for the 0.1 w style)
Are all your fixtures the same make and model? If they mix and match styles of Wedding LED Lighting, the color will not be exact from one fixture to another.
Can you wirelessly control the color or brightness of your Wedding LED Lighting? Do they stay the same all night long or will they change? This is personal decision you must make as the bride – do you want the background color of your wedding to change or will you be bored and want changes to the lighting based on what is going on or you can utilize color changes to enhance dancing.
Will someone be on-site throughout the event to monitor the Wedding LED Lighting? This will allow for things like fixtures being accidentally moved, bumped or unplugged to be reset.
Do you have photos of the last couple events that you’ve used your lighting at? Be sure they can identify the facility and event (to make sure they are not showing you someone else’s photos and not their own Wedding LED lighting examples).

Wedding LED Lighting can make your reception dramatic and stunning if done correctly. It also can turn your special day into a circus if done incorrectly. Know what you are getting for Wedding LED Lighting. Get it in writing!

Lindsay & Matthew’s Tented Wedding at The Connecticut River Museum in Essex CT

Lindsay and Matthew were married on the dock at the Connecticut River Museum. It started to rain right in the middle of their exchange of vows but both bride and groom and guests were not daunted. The heated tent provided a haven for the on and off rain all night.

Now Matthew and his twin brother John used to work as kids at my father's Christmas Tree farm in Southwick, MA. My parents were in the audience (I think this was the first time they ever saw me DJ) as were many neighbors from my childhood.

We provided the microphones and music for their ceremony out on the dock, DJ & Master of Ceremony for the reception and the tent lighting courtesy of our new 3W LED par cans. Lindsay wanted to use fall colors - Red and Orange highlighted the tent surface. You could see the color glowing right through to the outside.

Wedding Lighting Ideas – Reception Up Lighting and Event Lighting With Rob Alberti’s Event Services

Couples often spend months planning every detail of their wedding, from the exact shades for the bridal party dresses and the font on the wedding invitations to the decoration and topper of the wedding cake and the song played as they come in for their grand entrance, but a surprising number of wedding couples never realize they should also plan the appropriate wedding lights.

Without the proper lighting, pictures may not turn out as well, the details of the floral centerpieces and wedding gown lace may be missed, and you may not clearly see the smiling faces of your friends and family members. You might want to highlight the beauty of certain objects using pin spots, which also can accentuate a table’s place settings or linens.

There are many considerations to make when deciding on wedding lighting:

What lighting is already available in the facility?
Will there be candle lighting in the room?
What is the overall moon that you want to set for your wedding? Dramatic? Party? Romantic?
Will the lighting match both the facility and the rest of your wedding color scheme?
Will lighting help your photographer or videographer’s work? Up Lighting can add dimension to a photographer’s work. Up lighting and dance floor ceiling washes can help reduce the need for flood lighting from your videographer’s camera (which can detract from the dance atmosphere)

What Needs To Be Lit?

You can highlight the head table and cake
You can wash the dance floor with lighting
You can create pattern lighting on large walls or ceilings
You can light architectural features within the room (Columns, windows, etc) with up lighting or LED par can lighting effects
You can bring attention to certain tables by using under table lighting to make the table linens glow with color
You could spotlight the dance floor for your first dance or use a spotlight for your grand entrance

Typically wedding reception up lighting is set as your “background” color of your wedding and should not change. For some couples, being able to make color scene changes throughout their reception or having the up lighting change based on the music is important. Your lighting designer can offer many suggestions to help create the perfect color pallet for your wedding reception.

Wedding reception up lighting can make an inexpensive banquet hall look upscale. Up lighting can bring drama and that “wow” factor to your reception. Reception lighting can make your photos look amazing and add color to your video. Event lighting will help highlight the important features of your reception and can bring your wedding theme to life with a cohesive design color and style.

Bartering While Planning Your Wedding – Reduce Your Wedding Budget

While planning your wedding, brides quickly realize that everything is more expensive than they ever thought. When you are budgeting for your wedding, there are ways to keep costs in check. Be a savvy wedding shopper and research on the internet. Maybe you will find a blow-out sales on that wedding favor you love. Maybe you can find a discount coupon for your limo. There is another way to save on your wedding budget – why not barter?

Bartering is the trading of goods or services – reducing your out of pocket costs. Bartering does not have to be a 1 for 1 trade. Maybe the item you have to offer is worth less than the service that you are bartering for – then a simple negotiation and calculation will allow you to arrive a the new out of pocket cost.

Maybe you have a time share in Florida that your florist is interested in. Your soon to be father-in-law might be a skilled carpenter who is will to trade a few hours of his time for a discount on your wedding cake. Think about your resources and discuss with your close relatives – they might feel honored to chip in and help you out with your wedding budget.

Amy & Dylan’s Wedding Reception and Ceremony at Storrowton Tavern in the Big E Fairgrounds, West Springfield MA

Amy & Dylan were planning on an outdooor wedding ceremony under the gazebo, but rain placed the ceremony inside the Old Meeting House. We provided music and microphones for the ceremony as well as lighting and music for the reception at the Carriage House.

Although the staff was not very accommodating, sometimes downright rude (we were locked out of the Meeting House so we could not setup for the ceremony until about 30 minutes prior to guest arrival) and facility could use some serious updating and upkeep, we came in and lit up the space to make it more wedding friendly for our bride.

Western Mass Wedding Reception v. Fairfield County Connecticut Wedding Reception

Being in the wedding industry for over 25 years, we have seen our share of weddings and wedding trends. There are definitely regional differences in wedding receptions between these two fairly close areas of Western Mass and Fairfield County, CT wedding receptions.

For example, In Fairfield County – they tend to cut the wedding cake around 9pm (well into dancing) and many clients even dance between courses during the meal service. Western Mass weddings can be more subdued. No dancing between meal courses, but we do tend to cut the wedding cake prior to the end of meal service.

Everything tends to be a bit bigger at Fairfield County wedding receptions – the floral centerpieces can be more extravagant. The wedding photography budgets can be twice the size as at your Fairfield County wedding compared to the Western Mass wedding reception counterpart.

Sometimes it seeks Western Mass wedding receptions are 3-5 years behind their Fairfield County wedding southern neighbors. All the wedding shows on TV (My Fair Wedding, Four Weddings and Platinum Weddings) show most of their wedding receptions tables as rectangular with these amazingly opulent table décor. At your Western Mass wedding – you tend to not have a choice – it’s round tables for everyone. The décor at most Fairfield County weddings can be paramount to everything. Everything must look like it came right out of a Wedding Magazine for these Fairfield County Brides. Sure, their budgets tend to a bit higher than your average Western Mass Wedding client. Wedding color schemes, signature drinks and trendy design elements are all in play in Fairfield County.

Jacki & Chris Wedding Reception at Crowne Plaza Warwick RI – LED Uplighting

We had the pleasure of lighting Jacki & Chris' wedding reception held at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick RI last night. You have to check out the BEFORE photo and compare to the other photos. It is amazing how much lighting will change a venue. We utilized about 10 LED fixtures and another 12 par cans to add the purple and blue into the room. Their florist provided the blue LED glowing vases as each centerpiece. We also lit the wedding cake with two soft spot lights to make all the bling on the cake topper really shine.
